Amantadine capsule is used to relieve pain in dogs and cats and it can also be prescribed as an antiviral agent.
- May be used for the treatment of arthritis in dogs and cats.
- Is sometimes used to treat neuropathic pain caused by a nerve injury.
- May be used in the treatment of cancer pain, especially bone cancer.
- Can be used as an antiviral agent.
The nervous system has a NMDA receptor that makes animals more susceptible to pain. Amantadine blocks the NMDA receptor alleviating chronic pain for dogs and cats.
Diarrhea, flatulence, and agitation have been described as a side effect of Amantadine. Taking antihistamines with Amatidine may cause dry mouth, difficulty urinating, and an increased heart rate.
Amantadine is not for pets with kidney disease, seizure disorders, behavioral disorders, liver disease or congestive heart disease. Pets with untreated glaucoma or pregnant or nursing should not take Amantadine. Amatidine should not be taken with Trimethoprim-sulfa (an antibiotic) or quinidine (a heart medication). Thiazide diuretics may decrease the excretion of amantadine.
